Culture and Society

"It is certainly true that our world has been changing very fast over the last few hundred years,... Rapid technological and economic changes have destabilized not only established habits of work, but long-standing habits of thinking and acting. This has been the source of much dislocation and stress. But ... technological and economic change has also opened the door for questioning much that was once taken for granted... The questioning we see all over the world today of sex roles and relations is thus part of a much larger questioning. It is also part of a much larger movement for change: the global movement toward more democratic and egalitarian relations in both the so-called private and public spheres."

Riane Eisler

We tend to think of culture as "just the way things are", as if it is a mountain, to huge for us to move or alter. But as Dr. Eisler points out, the fact is that cultures change constantly and we humans are now in a unique position in our history to consciously decide how to change ours. It is an awesome responsibility and a great opportunity that humanity can not afford to miss.

In fact, the horrific terrorist attack on September 11 will change, not only our culture but the culture of the world with unprecedented speed and certainty. It is up to us to make sure the changes that result from those lost lives are for the better, not for the worst. Their unwilling sacrifice provides an opportunity to bring the world together in Partnership like never before. For hope in the midst of fear and insecurity, see our article, The School for Violence.

Cultural Transformation Theory is the life's work of Riane Eisler. It is the foundation of all of her books and articles. Rather than duplicating the entire list of books and articles on the subject, which can be found on the Library section of this site. Here are a few of the basics to get you started on this great journey of ideas.
